(Refurb) Nook Simple Touch + Cover for ~ $115 AUD (after Rebates and Free B&N Gift Cards)

(Refurb) Nook Simple Touch + Cover for ~ $115 AUD (after Rebates and Free B&N Gift Cards)

This is my first post here, so apologies if this doesn't fit completely with the kind of deals posted on this site. It's slightly complex, and requires the use of a mail forwarder in the US (but surely all Oz Bargainers have one by now, don't they?), but in the end it results in a great price for a Barnes and Noble Nook Simple Touch. The NST has just had a software update which makes it an even better reader. It runs on Android, too, and so is rootable to do all kinds of stuff (Google Maps etc). A great x-mas present for someone who loves reading, or for yourself!

To put this deal in context, Dick Smith is currently selling the outdated Kindle Keyboard model for $139!

In my opinion the NST is at least the equal of the upcoming Kindle 4, but that's a discussion for another time!

Basically it involves using several current promotions to get a Nook delivered to Aus with a cover for the very low final price of $115 AUD (depending on the exchange rate, and which cover you choose). Note that $20 of this price comes from free gift cards to Barnes and Noble, and $10 of the discount is from the eBates cashback site.

Simply put, the great price comes from:

-eBates currently running double (8%) cashback at Barnes and Noble;

-eBates running a sign up promotion that nets you a free B&N gift card of $10;

-B&N running a promotion that gives you a free $10 e-gift card to B&N when you buy a B&N gift card worth over $100; and

-B&N selling refurbished Nooks for $79 (and having free US shipping for all orders over $25).

By all accounts the "refurbed" Nooks are, for all intents and purposes, new other than a sticker that says "refurb" on the box (some people suspect B&N are trying to get rid of extra stock on the sly…).

I hope this helps someone!

Here is my post from Whirlpool:

First things first, you'll need to know how to use a mail forwarding service in the US and have that address handy. B&N don't ship these things internationally. My personal favourite is shipito, which I have found to be the cheapest and most reliable.

Next thing to do is to go to B&N.com and find out your complete order total, including tax. You'll need to make an account. You'll also need to register a default credit card so that you get your bonus gift card later. Don't worry though, it won't be charged and you can pay for everything via Paypal (damn international transaction fees). Even if you have a CC with good international transactions (ie 28 Degrees card), its probably better to use Paypal for all payments since you'll run into problems with the billing address.

Note that if your pre-tax order total isn't over $100, you won't receive the bonus B&N gift card -> see below. So it's a good idea to add a cover or whatever else to get it over $100.

Shipping within the US is free (for all orders over $25).

Here is the link to the Refurbished Touch, since it's a bit hard to find through B&N's site:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/cpo-nook-simple-touch-barnes...

By all accounts these are almost new (and might be but B&N are simply trying to rid themselves or excess nook stock).

Here is the place to go for 7% or 10% off coupons (will only apply to any covers or accessories you buy not the nook itself, but every little bit helps!):

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargains/533548-barnes-noble-co...

The current 10% off coupon is V7F3Y3T.

Once you have your order total (including sales tax if shipping to shipito in CA and including any coupon discounts) write it down. Remove everything from your cart.

Next step is to make an account on eBates.com and select a gift card as your sign up bonus (B&N obviously). Edit account details with your paypal email so that they will eventually credit you (I can't remember when the next date is, I think after Xmas sometime).

Once you're done with that, go to the eBates page for B&N (http://www.ebates.com/stores/barnesandnoble.com.htm?query=ba...) and click the "Shop now" link. It should say "tracking ticket opened" and take you to the B&N site. You've got to complete step 3 through this opened window now until you complete checkout in so don't close it.

If you do accidentally, just rinse and repeat through the eBates B&N "shop now" link.

This step nets you 8% cashback (sent to your paypal in ~2-3 months), and the $10 B&N sign up bonus giftcard (emailed to you 4-6 weeks after your first $25 purchase through ebates ie the purchase we are about to make).

Normally eBates cashbacks don't apply to Nooks bought from B&N, but what we are going to do is buy a giftcard for ourselves to cover the Nook purchase. Giftcards ARE eligible. Also B&N currently have a promotion where if you buy a gift card worth more than $100 USD, they email you a bonus $10 e-gift card on Dec 26 to use on whatever you like.

On the B&N site, go to the gift cards section. Buy an e-gift card which is a little over your order total (and over $100), and have it emailed to yourself.

You can pay for the B&N gift card through Paypal, but make sure you at least have some sort of default credit card registered in your account with B&N by this stage (I believe this is necessary to get the $10 gift card on Dec 26th).

Once you have bought your B&N gift card, you'll need to wait for it to be emailed to you. It should come immediately (for some reason I had to email them to authorise my order, but it came through after a day or so).

Last step, once you have your gift card, is to go back to the B&N site, re-add everything to your cart, re-apply the coupons, and then use your gift card to buy everything (don't bother going through ebates for this step double dipping won't work!). If for some reason you are a little short (you miscalculated the order amount), you can pay the rest through paypal.

Shipping is ridiculously quick my Nook and cover were on their way to Shipito within 24 hours of placing the order. Once the nook & cover are at your mail forwarder of choice, either have them sent here straight away (since nooks & covers are light, I reckon it will only cost $30-$40 via FedEx/DHL and less for the slower options) or combine it with other packages and save even more.

Once nice thing is that AFAIK, the two $10 B&N discount codes you will eventually receive can be used on anything: Nook Books, Covers, or even a second Nook!
